History
Serpentine began in a small former tea room in Kensington Gardens, now known as the South Gallery. Since starting its exhibition programme in 1970, it has remained artist-led, free, and open to all.
Today, Serpentine spans two sites in Kensington Gardens, hosting year-round exhibitions in art, design, architecture, performance, and community projects.
Image shows Sue Grayson Ford (first person to lead Serpentine) & Stephen Collingbourne - a then a gallery assistant & painter, taken by Edward Lucie-Smith a Summer Show Committee Member.

Vision
At Serpentine, we believe art should be part of everyday life, and we work to connect artists and audiences wherever they are.
As a responsive, collaborative institution attuned to a changing world, we embrace new ways to reach our growing audience. From digital arts research to our exhibition programme, we bring a London gallery to a global stage, connecting artists and audiences across many mediums.
Our editions and exhibition products are a key part of bringing art into everyone's daily life.

Purpose
Our product offering is one of the key ways we share art with a wider audience, letting visitors take a piece of it home with them.
From glasses cases to sculptures, vases to piggy banks, and limited edition etchings, we curate collections of luxury and everyday objects alike. Our online shop brings that same retail experience to international and remote audiences, delivering to their door wherever they are. Through this, we bring art directly into our supporters' daily lives.
Serpentine has been a free public art institution since 1970, and every purchase, in person or online, helps keep our exhibitions free and open to all.
