Published on the occasion of Jenna Sutela’s exhibition of the same name at Kunsthall Trondheim, this book probes meaning and randomness in the artist’s wetware-powered work. With a special focus on Sutela’s latest work I Magma, co-commissioned by Serpentine Galleries and Moderna Museet in 2019, NO NO NSE NSE explores the notion of an oracular or alternative intelligence through the application of neural machinic and chemical processes.

NO NO NSE NSE includes contributions by Lars Bang Larsen, Stefanie Hessler, Caroline A. Jones, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Allison Parrish, Lars TCF Holdhus, and Ben Vickers. Co-published by Kunsthall Trondheim, Serpentine Galleries, and Koenig Books. Thanks to Finsk-Norsk Kulturinstitutt, Kulturrådet, and Oslo Kunstforening.

Jenna Sutela is a Finnish artist based in Berlin. She and her studio work with biological and computational systems, including the human microbiome and artificial neural networks to create sculptures, images and music. Sutela works with words, sounds, and other living media, such as Bacillus subtilis nattō bacteria and the “many-headed” slime mold Physarum polycephalum. Her audiovisual pieces, sculptures, and performances seek to identify and react to precarious social and material moments, often in relation to technology.

Sutela's work has been presented at museums and art contexts internationally, including Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève (2024); Swiss Institute, New York (2023); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2022); Castello di Rivoli (2022); Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki (2022); Shanghai Biennale (2021); Liverpool Biennial (2021); Kunsthall Trondheim (2020); Serpentine Galleries, London (2019); and Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2019). She was a Visiting Artist at The MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) in 2019-21.
