Jenna Sutela: Baby MagmaSold Out
Baby Magma, 2022
Glass Lava Head
Edition of 20 + 4 APs
With a hand signed and numbered certificate from the artist
We are delighted to release Jenna Sutela’s limited edition titled Baby Magma. These hand-blown lava lamps are formed in the likeness of the artist and modelled after the collection of heads that were created as part of Sutela’s 2019 work, I Magma, a co-commission between Serpentine and Moderna Museet. The edition presents a small scale version of Sutela’s lava heads made in collaboration with the classic lava lamp producer Mathmos. Its title is inspired by how Mathmos names their smaller lava lamps, such as Astro Baby.
Drawing from histories of mysticism, psychedelia and technology, I Magma placed an emphasis on altered states of consciousness and the creation of artificially intelligent ‘deep-dreaming’ computational systems that mimic the brain. The magma, or goo inside the original lava heads was used as a seed for mystical AI-powered predictions in a mobile application. Lava lamps have a history as random number generators but instead, Sutela looked for patterns, signs and meaning in the blobs of liquid color in motion.
The neuroplastic edition comes in two different coloured liquids: Baby Magma (Blue) and Baby Magma (Yellow).
Mathmos was founded in 1963 by the inventor of the lava lamp Edward Craven Walker, beginning with the invention of the Astro lava lamp, a twentieth-century design classic. Mathmos factory is still based in Poole, Dorset where their lamps have been in continuous production since their invention in 1963 and are still recognised as the best quality lava lamps available. They take pride in their long British manufacturing history, their high quality and their heritage of invention and design.
All proceeds directly support Serpentine's multiple strands of programming and most importantly during this time, the delivery of our civic engagement projects.
