On the occasion of her exhibition Quack Quack at the Serpentine North Gallery, Rose Wylie has created a second Limited Edition print.
Wylie makes paintings, drawings and prints of visually compelling images that she encounters on a day-to-day basis, finding inspiration in a variety of sources, from art history, cinema, comic books and the natural world to verbal anecdotes, news and celebrity stories. These might include a scene from Quentin Tarantino’s iconic Kill Bill films, a self-portrait of Wylie in her party clothes, or an olive oil label. Driven by a relentless curiosity and instilled with wit, her images propose new perspectives on the world and the plethora of images that make up our collective cultural memory.
This Limited Edition print is titled Self Portrait with Shut Mouth. Wylie often combines text within her work to anchor facts and memories and here, she has included her initials ‘RW’ to indicate the identity of the sitter. The closely cropped composition is informed, like many of Wylie’s paintings, by cinematography. This work sits in contrast to the image of the artist’s open mouth about to eat a chocolate biscuit in her iconic painting Choco Leibniz (2006).
