“My inclination to paint, especially from life, is a completely political one. We belong here. We deserve to be seen and acknowledged in real time. We deserve to be heard and to be imaged with shameless generosity and accuracy.” – Jennifer Packer
Jennifer Packer’s paintings address art historical approaches to the nebulous genres of portraiture and still life, while remaining rooted in a deeply personal context. On occasion, Packer has described her compositions as vessels of personal grief. Chris Abani writes, “So it seems that the desire to make art, to draw the limits of the body, to create a simulacrum has its roots in loss; or at least, the possibility of loss. The need to remember, to create (or re-create) a body out of loss, but also against loss, and against forgetting, is what drives the artist.”
