In 2016 the Serpentine Galleries presented the work of renowned American painter, Alex Katz. Over the course of his career, spanning almost 70 years, Katz has developed his unique approach to contemporary representational painting. Beginning his career through the height of Abstract Expressionism, his work has developed through inspiration from modern life, influenced by films, billboard advertising, music, poetry and his close circle of friends and family.
Ariel 3 illustrates his distinctive portrait style, through the flatness of colour and fluidity of line, exemplifying his life-long quest to capture the present, fleeting moment in paint. Katz draws parallels between his approach to painting and his interest in poetry, both equally concerned with stripping away unnecessary detail to leave only the essential information. Regardless of their scale, Katz has described his paintings as ‘environmental’ in the way in which they envelop the viewer, the intention can be felt with Ariel’s gaze.
Alex Katz has generously donated this limited edition to the Serpentine Galleries on the occasion of the Serpentine's 50th anniversary.
