DAS INSTITUT with Kathrin Sonntag, 2016
33 x 33 cm

Edition of 100 + 10 APs
On the occasion of their exhibition at the Serpentine North Gallery, DAS INSTITUT (Kerstin Brätsch and Adele Röder) have produced a unique Limited Edition.
Consisting of a C-type photographic print placed on a powder-coated metal shelf, the edition continues DAS INSTITUT's insistence on an awareness of an art object that extends beyond its physical boundaries to incorporate the system of display that is supporting it.
The image is taken from the slide series Am Sonntag (2016) which is on show for the first time as part of their exhibition at the Serpentine.
Artist Kathrin Sonntag photographed DAS INSTITUT in a number of guises, holding props, wearing items of clothing often designed by them, and with their profiles obscured with black paint. This optical trick, a relic from the early days of cinema, enables the artists to produce a number of grotesque and humorous figures; as each 'makes up' the other, they attempt to embody the character they have been given without knowing exactly how their appearance has been changed.
The resulting compositions play with intentional and unintentional references from art history, literature and pop culture.
These Editions are made to order and have a fabrication time of 6-8 weeks.
