Christo: The Mastaba (Project for London, Hyde Park, Serpentine Lake) 2018

Giclée print

Dimensions: 55 x 63 cm

Signed by the artist

To celebrate Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s exhibition at the Serpentine Galleries and their first outdoor public art project in the UK, Christo has produced a second signed print about The London Mastaba. Christo donated these prints to Serpentine Galleries and will receive no income from their sales.

The London Mastaba captured the world’s imagination during the summer months of 2018.

Comprising 7,506 coloured barrels floating on the Serpentine lake in Hyde Park, the temporary sculpture was 20 meters high x 30 meters wide (at the 60° slanted walls) x 40 meters long.

This hand-signed print by the artist, depicts one of Christo’s collages for The London Mastaba which was featured in the Serpentine Galleries exhibition from 19 June to 9 September 2018. Christo’s original preparatory drawings and collages are fundamental to his process of conceiving and developing works in public spaces. Christo also sells his original works to fund the temporary art projects. During the lead up to the completion of the sculpture, he created 50 works on paper, often combining photography by Wolfgang Volz with a variety of media and technical data. Strikingly detailed and precise, this new print of a collage captures the monumentality, practicality and vision of Christo’s temporary intervention on the Serpentine lake.

'The temporary quality of the projects is an aesthetic decision. Our works are temporary in order to endow the works of art with a feeling of urgency to be seen, and the love and tenderness brought by the fact that they will not last. Those feelings are usually reserved for other things such as our childhood  and our own life. We want to offer this feeling of love and tenderness to our works, as an added value and as an additional aesthetic quality.'

Christo and Jeanne-Claude, 2005
