On the occasion of their solo exhibition On Venus, at the Serpentine Galleries, P. Staff has produced a new limited edition artwork, Spilt Snake.

On Venus  presents Staff's most ambitious work to date, a newly commissioned site specific installation comprised of video, sculpture and architectural intervention. Within the installation and shown for the very first time, On Venus (2019) is a looping video which gives the show its name, exploring the industrial farming of hormonal, reproductive and carnal animal commodities including urine, semen, various meats, skins and furs. The video’s second part comprises a poem describing life on Venus, a state marked by violent pressure and heat, destructive winds and the disorienting lapse of day into night.

This limited edition Split Snake is a film still from this new video work, printed as a single colour silkscreen on holographic stock. A snake, momentarily suspended mid-curl, is held between human hands. As blood pools below them, a pair of scissors lie to the left of the image. The work presents a mediated moment of violence within interspecies interaction, refracted through similar materials and strategies as in the bespoke installation of Staff's work at the Serpentine Galleries. Rather than reducing the struggles of animal life to anthropocentric claims, Staff's work points to the entanglement of species, sex, race and labour in the conditions of capitalism, advocating a reciprocal, constitutive relationship between the contemporary human and non-human subject.
