This beautiful, limited edition multimedia print presents a frottaged work by the artist similar to many pieces which were included in the exhibition. Frottage is the artistic technique of using an abrasive material such as; graphite, charcoal or chalk to imprint a textured surface onto paper. Penone has consistently used his own body as well as natural material such as trees or plants to imprint onto gallery walls as well as onto smaller scale drawings. Penone’s use of cello tape to frottage and imprint images onto paper is unique to his practice. Cello tape being man-made, plastic and uniform contrasts the natural imprint of an irregular leaf or the creases of skin next to an eye.

This edition shows two sides of the artist’s face framing a small branch of ivy which traces from one cheekbone to the other. Penone’s work often explores the imprint the human body has on nature. Here both nature and the artists body imprint the page, using the ephemeral and impermanent to indelibly mark make. The original drawing is elegantly recreated as an edition through the use of screen-printing and varnish. Each edition is hand titled, signed and numbered by the artist. The edition comes unframed, quotations for framing are available upon request.

All proceeds from this edition directly support Serpentine’s exhibitions, architecture, design, education, and digital programmes.
