In 2024, Serpentine presented Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive an exhibition of new works by Refik Anadol. The first major institutional solo exhibition in the UK, Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive enveloped viewers in immersive environments that utilise years-long experimentation with visual data of coral reefs and rainforests and showcases the creative potential of AI.
Serpentine and Refik Anadol, presents a new limited edition - Artificial Realities: Coral - a generative art series that reimagines marine ecosystems through the lens of machine intelligence, offering both a visual archive and a speculative reconstruction of underwater biodiversity. Artificial Realities: Coral marks a development in Anadol’s ongoing investigation into our visual memories of nature by using advanced technology.
The release includes six prints. In Artificial Realities: Coral, six visions of marine ecosystems are translated into Diasec-mounted Giclée prints on aluminium composite panel. Each print is numbered and hand-signed on the label by the artist.
The artworks were created using a unique AI model which was trained on ethically-sourced coral reef datasets, marine imaging archives and ecological studies. This includes 1,741,772 images from publicly available image databases. The model interpreted this information to ‘hallucinate’ coral forms that have never existed but are nonetheless rooted in informed logic.
Each work in the series operates as both a meditation on nonhuman intelligence and a call to reenvision our ecological imagination through emerging technologies. Situated between science and speculative art, Artificial Realities: Coral invites collectors into an evolving visual language of fragility, transformation and environmental storytelling.
As Anadol said, "AI Art can be more than just an aesthetic experience; it can serve as a bridge between data, science, and emotion. Artificial Realities: Coral is one example of how technology can be harnessed to deepen our understanding of the natural world and inspire collective action.”
