This limited edition is the first of its kind and released on the occasion of Georg Baselitz: Sculptures 2011-2015 at Serpentine. It is based on a hand-moulded foot – a recurring motif in Baselitz’s work. The artist often describes the foot as a self-portrait and how his “connection is not upwards, but rather downwards”. Baselitz transforms the foot into rarified gold, a technique he employs in his recent bronze fire-gilded works. He previously remarked that he’d always desired to create sculptures out of gold “but never dared to do so” – until now. His gold pendent limited edition is an evolution of Baselitz’s sculptural practice from roughly hewn timber sculptures in Sculptures 2011-2015 to hand-moulded works, continuing his exploration of the complexity of memory and rough edges of humanity. This pendent is hand-crafted by jewellery artist Otto Jakob, a student of Baselitz between 1977-1980.
With a career spanning over six decades, Georg Baselitz (b. 1938, Saxony, Germany) first came to prominence in 1960s Germany as a painter. From 1969 onwards, he has been known for inverting – or turning upside down – human forms and other motifs within expressionistic paintings which attempt to move away from content and narrative. Baselitz instead focussed on form, colour and texture, bringing new perspectives to the tradition of figurative painting. He turned to sculpture from 1979, continuing to explore tensions between the figurative and the abstract through crude approximations of figures and body parts carved from wood.
All proceeds directly support Serpentine's multiple strands of programming and most importantly during this time, the delivery of our civic engagement projects.
