This book is designed as an introduction to the work of Egyptian artist Wael Shawky, to accompany his exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery and was co-produced by Sharjah Art Foundation.

Focussing on Shawky’s interest in specific narratives, the book contains three short stories by Egyptian writer Mohamed Mustagab that were selected by Shawky as scripts in his most recent film series, Al Araba Al Madfuna (2012) and Al Araba Al Madfuna II (2013). These stories are accompanied by a foreword by Serpentine Gallery directors Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist and an essay by Hoor Al-Qasimi, President of the Sharjah Art Foundation. Drawings created by Shawky especially for the book are interspersed throughout.

All texts in Horsemen Adore Perfumes and other stories are presented in English and in Arabic.
