A newly published look at this much-celebrated temporary structure, the 7th building in the Serpentine Gallery's internationally acclaimed architectural programme.

The central design of the 2006 Pavilion, designed by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup, was a spectacular ovoid-shaped inflatable canopy that could be raised or lowered to cover the amphitheatre below. The walled enclosure underneath the canopy functioned as both a cafe and a forum for daily public programmes.

This design emobodied the aims of both designers and the Serpentine by creating a setting for shared discussion: an architecture that, as Koolhaas explained, 'facilitated the inclusion of individuals in communal dialogue and shared experience'.
