With do not postpone Tillmans is asking us to rotate our view, holistically, to look forward rather than intuitively down, at the printer output tray. To turn around, look at the past, a message from one self to the future self. This piece serves as a reminder of urgency, of being present in the moment, “to not postpone”, the time is now. Layers of paper peep from behind the protagonist sheet revealing previous messages to past recipients and past selves.
Over the past 30 years, Tillmans has redefined photography and the way it is presented. In a historic Serpentine exhibition in 2010, Tillmans's explorations into abstraction sat alongside a renewed focus on the figurative. Referring to his approach to installation, Tillmans commented that in creating these “constellations of pictures, I try to approximate the way I see the world, not in a linear order but as a multitude of parallel experiences. Multiple singularities, simultaneously accessible as they share the same space or room”. Wolfgang Tillmans has generously donated this limited edition to the Serpentine Galleries on the occasion of the Serpentine's 50th anniversary.
