Frida Escobedo has created this edition of unique obsidian mirrors on the occasion of the Serpentine Pavilion 2018, designed by Frida Escobedo Taller de Arquitectura. The obsidian stones, cut to the proportions of the Pavilion constructed in London’s Kensington Gardens, have been polished on one side to become a highly reflective surface, while the back has been left rough. Like the Pavilion design, the natural, rough qualities of the raw material abut a smooth, carefully considered surface and echoes the reflective qualities of Escobedo’s pool within the Pavilion.
A small leaflet included in the presentation box designed for each edition includes a set of references to the use of darkened mirrors as a Claude Glass, a 17th century drawing device, a tool for scrying and divination in pre-Columbian Mexico, and as inspiration in 20th century literature in a reference from Capote’s Music for Chameleons.
