Continuing the inversion of perspectives that Hurtado has experimented with throughout her career, such as looking down or across her own body, this monochromatic, hand-printed work depicts a pregnant body in the process of giving birth, executed through expressionistic contours and washes of light and dark.

Please note: As this is a framed Edition, please allow a 2-3 week turnaround for the bespoke frame to be made until your order is ready.

This publication brings together two interconnected art projects by Suzanne Treister, SURVIVOR (F) and a Serpentine Galleries commission, The Escapist BHST (Black Hole Spacetime), both of which explore imaginary scenarios of techno-human evolution over vast cosmological time spans.

Drawing on current research in artificial intelligence, cosmology and theoretical physics, the works take us on a beautiful and mind expanding journey through the possibilities of inter-dimensional time-travel, consciousness and the singularity.

Combining the ecstatic state of the mystical with the agnostic and iterative nature of the scientific, the projects take the form of alchemical diagrams, fashion designs for space travel, a comic strip, video, paintings and watercolours.

Since the late 1980s Suzanne Treister has engaged with emerging technologies and their relationship to society, alternative belief systems and the potential futures of humanity. By bringing together abstract, figurative, collaged and computer-generated elements on the canvas, he continues to explore an inventive diversity of artistic approaches. Through Expressionist brushwork, Surrealist gestures and deliberate amateurism, Oehlen engages with the history of painting, pushing its essential components of colour, gesture, motion and time to bold new extremes.

Oehlen’s exhibition at the Serpentine focuses on a recurring thread within his practice through a selection of works dating from the 1980s until the present day, which are brought together under the rubric of the John Graham Remix series. Taking its title from the eponymous American Modernist figurative painter, this body of work appropriates elements of Graham’s painting, Tramonto Spaventoso (‘Terrifying Sunset’) (1940–49), which have then been interpreted, remixed and reconfigured by Oehlen across multiple compositions. Graham’s painting becomes a singular starting point for the artist’s experimentation, ‘a vehicle for endless interpretation’ that he has continued to return to throughout his career.

This Limited Edition Ol`man driver - 3d transposes the various motifs contained within Graham’s painting into a three-dimensional form, allowing for each of its elements to become visible from multiple perspectives. McKee draws on their specialism in the art and visual culture of the modern Atlantic world in order to read Télémaque’s work through a psychoanalytic lens and the context of Haitian art. Artist Helen Marten and writer Lyonel Trouillot have composed thoughtful and poetic responses to Télémaque’s work, suggesting new points of entry into the artist’s oeuvre. Political scientist Françoise Vergès uses the artist’s recurring motif of the open mouth as a starting point for a meditation on Haitian history and the politics of anti-Blackness, while art historian Sarah Wilson’s text contextualises Télémaque’s practice within the wider European artistic scene. Tiravanija’s installation featured a full-scale, fully functioning replica of his New York apartment and a broadcasting studio, all available for visitors to use. Along with the replica apartment, a broadcasting studio was also installed within the Serpentine Gallery, from which a serialized radio programme about the artist’s life was transmitted live on a daily basis. Tiravanija’s work, like this installation, crosses the boundaries between sculpture, installation and performance. Acting as a catalyst, Tiravanija created situations in which the divisions between art and life were removed. He often cited ‘lots of people’ as a key element, making reference to the improvisational nature of his work and his desire for it to be used.

Rirkrit Tiravanija is a Thai contemporary artist. Tiravanija attended Ontario College of Art in Toronto (1980–84), the Banff Center School of Fine Arts (1984), the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1984–86), and the Whitney Independent Studies Program in New York (1985–86). In the 1990s, Tiravanija began producing works that revolved around his own personal history, he is quoted as saying “My starting point was the search for my identity in foreign places, in places where I am estranged from myself”. Rirkrit Tiravanija pioneered the Relational Aesthetics movement, which in simplified terms places people; their interactions, their environments at the centre of the work as opposed to art objects. His work has in the past taken the form of communal cooking and eating where audiences are invited into an event or environment of Tirivanija’s making, often providing space for smaller personal moments, whilst relating these to wider political concerns. Rirkrit Tiravanija has exhibited at the Serpentine Galleries as well as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, USA as well as the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the National Gallery Singapore and the Venice Biennale to name a few.

This limited edition takes reference from one of Rirkrit Tiravanija’s marble sculptures of the same name, originally shown in Rirkrit Tiravanija: untitled 2020 (once upon a time) (after jasper johns) at Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris 2020. It disrupts and re-appropriates the American flag inserting a phrase over the top of the distorted stars and desaturated stripes. “The Ambrosias of Evil” acts not only as a provocative phrase, but also exercises one’s right to critique. Similarly, this edition emulates the monochrome aesthetic through the process of blind embossing. The print emerges through imprints on the paper, no ink is used in this process, but in its absence, there remains a ghostly presence.

“People forget that it is part of political speech, part of enacting your right to critique. […] So, this idea of deconstructing the flag has been going on since the 1980s, since Ronald Reagan. Or even for longer, since the Vietnam war protests. An interdisciplinary, research-driven community of humans and non-humans, Arachnophilia focuses on the extraordinary architecture of spider webs and their behaviours, which entangle us in various cultural perceptions, myths, and relationships. Through expanding its artistic networks, the Arachnophilia community seeks to invent innovative, playful, and engaging platforms for bringing research discourse into the public sphere. As well as inviting musicians to collaborate on arachnophilia performances, at Studio Tomás Saraceno this consists of research and praxis in the fields of biomateriomics, bioacoustics, biotremology ethology, and cognitive science, among others, as a way of engaging speculatively, but also sensitively, with the forms of life that exist all around us.

This cyanotype print is taken from a photograph of a work by Saraceno, World(ing)WideWeb(s).Life, 2023,featuring a delicate spider web. These texts touch on central themes of Remembering including the artist’s exploration of Surrealism, figuration, abstraction, and the inspiration she has taken from Indian court paintings and folk narratives. They also discuss how since the 1990s, Singh has increasingly focused on themes of motherhood, the aging female form, feminine sensuality, vulnerability, and violence exploring the impact of relationships and external events on her emotional and psychological landscape.

£28

Dimensions: 20 x 24 x 1.9 cm

Pages: 224

Binding: Softcover

ISBN: 978-1-908617-91-0

Serpentine, London; 978-3-7533-0825-8 Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, Köln

Edited by: Tamsin Hong, Rebecca Ribichini, and Liz Stumpf

Publication date: March 2025

© Photo: readsreads.info

Radio Ballads: Songs for Change

Serpentine Civic Projects presents a new publication: Radio Ballads: Songs for Change.

What kinds of collective songs are needed today?

Radio Ballads: Songs for Change takes its name from a revolutionary series of radio programmes broadcast on the BBC from 1957–64, a time of rapid change across the UK. Combining song, music and sound effects with the voices and stories of communities, each original Ballad focused on the lived experiences of workers and groups whose voices were otherwise rarely, or never, heard in the media. Building on these histories of collective song and storytelling, this publication shares the process of Serpentine Civic Projects creating four new Radio Ballads over 60 years later (2019—2023), with artists Sonia Boyce, Helen Cammock, Rory Pilgrim and Ilona Sagar in collaboration with carers, organisers, social workers and residents in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Radio Ballads: Songs for Change centres the voices and experiences of people whose care keeps many of us afloat through civic, grassroots and informal networks. A Capsule in Time, reflects on this notion and aims to evoke a meaningful dialogue between the permanent and ephemeral nature of the commission. The Pavilion considers this transience and connects it to parallels found within the dynamic nature of the Bengal Delta: a vast terrain located in the Indian subcontinent that sees land and water in constant flux and where architecture is also ephemeral, or adaptable to the extremities of weather. Populated by audiences over five months and used in a variety of ways, the Pavilion is then disassembled. In Tabassum’s words, ‘architecture becomes memories of lived spaces’.

Positioned along the north-south axis of the park, A Capsule in Time features an elongated capsule-like form with a central court that aligns with Serpentine South’s bell tower. Inspired by summer park-going and arched garden canopies that filter soft daylight through green foliage, the structure is comprised of four wooden sculptural forms with a translucent façade that diffuses and dapples light as it enters the space. Integral to Tabassum’s design is a kinetic element that allows one capsule form to move, transforming the space into a new configuration. This movement is similarly felt in the print’s two perspectives.

© 2025 Photo: readsreads.info

SERPENTINE PAVILION 2025 A CAPSULE IN TIME: Marina Tabassum Architects

To accompany the Serpentine Pavilion 2025 A Capsule in Time, designed by Marina Tabassum and her firm, Marina Tabassum Architects, Serpentine has co-published a catalogue with Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz Konig, Köln.

Designed by Wolfe Hall, it brings together new and insightful contributions from the fields of architecture and art to reflect on Tabassum’s Pavilion and wider practice.
